Web Design in a Nutshell : A Desktop Quick Reference by Jennifer Niederst, Richard Koman (Editor)

Although 580 pages deep you'll find this book is extremely concise and to the point on hundreds of topics related to web design. This book was designed to be a "essential" desk reference - it succeeded. It includes a comprehensive guides to HTML tags, browser compatibility issues, and cascading style sheet implementation.

Dynamic Html : The Definitive Reference by Danny Goodman

Do you have a good grasp of HTML but want to explore the implementation of DHTML features on your site? If so, Danny Goodman has created this book to help you.

Written as a reference book rather than as a tutorial, it includes comprehensive information as well as a quick guide. It covers HTML and DHTML tags, CSS attributes, DOM structure, and javascript. Achieving cross-browser compatibility is given emphasis. This book skips the fluff so common in computer books. Goodman assumes you already know what DHTML is, his job is to help with the programming you need to implement it.

Web Style Guide : Basic Design Principles for Creating Web Sites by Patrick J. Lynch, Sarah Horton

The Yale University Center for Advanced Instructional Media's online style guide has been a favorite of novice and intermediate website developers for years. This book is basically a print edition of content that is online. Although you could forgo the book for the website, the book has convenience and readability aspects going for it. As for the guide itself - it is very practical, time-tested advice. In a sense it represents the status quo of what is almost universally accepted as good practice. Although following its advice won't put you on the cutting edge, your "style" will be better than 90% of the stuff found on the web. Check out the site, if you like what you see you'll really enjoy having immediate access to the information in book form.

Philip and Alex's Guide to Web Publishing by Philip Greenspun

This is another book that you can freely read on the web or you can buy it from amazon.com. I haven't done either... I will definitely read this one. It sounds so good I felt I had to share this one with you although I can't personally recommend it - Yet ...
Customer reviews at amazon.com for this book ( 137 of them at the time I write this! ) are the most enthusiastic I've seen for any book. Philip Greenspun could end up in the White House with the level of devotion his insights and writing instill in his readers. Alex the dog could be VP!

If all his fans are right this book could be the best book you or I ever read! I'm looking forward to it and will report back here when I've read it.

I've tried to recommend only truly great web design books. If you want more recommendations and give me some encouragement. Before you leave my web design book section, if you haven't already, I hope you'll ...
