Some people have
increadibly yucky jobs. You might think being an entomologist studying
bugs all day would be high in the yuck factor. How about taking the yuck
factor up a few notches and consider a career in the more specialized
field of Forensic
Entomology. Well I suppose somebody has to do this kind of work -
maybe there's an opportunity for you. |

Speaking of yucky - there is a site which claims to be the yuckiest in the world. They have an entertaining and educational section dedicated to cockroaches. Find it here. For a serious site devoted to informing you that roaches are pests try this link. It has lots of information on roaches and how to control the "problem". ( I put that in quotes because not everyone see roaches that way - some folks truly love the cute little critters! If you are one such person here are some instructions on how to care for them as pets ). If you have a roach problem here's a creative way to get rid of cockroaches - proven effective. Ya, some people actually do keep roaches as pets. The most common pet-grade roach is the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach. Here's a award winning essay written by a 17 year old student about her first experience handling a Madagascar hissing cockroach. Her story is informative. Should your pet roach get injured you need to call electrical engineer Steven Bathiche. He developed a robot car-like thingy controlled by a roach's muscle impulses. If your injured roach can still twitch then there's still hope he can be fitted with a high-tech mobility appliance. Did you realize that one pair of sexy German roaches can expand to more than two million in less than a year! ( Given how sexy these Germans are, it should come as no surprise that scientific investigations of low-income apartments have counted more than 10,000 cockroaches per apartment ). More than just sexy, roaches really can survive extreme doses of radiation. This link will tell you just how much. Although they survive at ground zero, they won't live through everything. Here's a link to a twisted site that graphically documents one guy's violent and demented exterminations of individual roaches. Be forewarned: Don't go to his site if you actually like cockroaches - you'll likely find it disturbingly sick. Even if you hate roaches you might still find it offensive. ( Note that he scans in the remains of his victims and documents the details of their tortured demise - emphasis on torture ). Changing the subject to something more fun - Do you remember how comic books have those ads packed with really useful products like itching powder, fake doggy doo and x-ray specs ? Well, the Archie McPhee website sells lots of that great stuff online. Get yourself or a close friend a lovely lunchbox full of plastic cockroaches here. If you are ever in Plano, Texas, be sure to visit the Cockroach Hall of Fame. Located in a do-it-yourself pest control shop ( why hire a professional killer when you can D-I-Y ) is a collection what can best be described as "cockroach art". For fun and the sheer joy of creating something "artistic", they have dressed up and created sets for mummified roach remains. For example they have a dead roach wearing a white mink cape sitting at the keyboard of a tiny grand piano. His name is Liberoachi. Isn't art wonderful. Here's some more art. I don't know if Tina Carvalho considers herself an artist or a scientist. Using a scanning electron microscope and then creatively colorizing the greyscale image captures, she creates images that are stunningly beautiful. She has a few roach images in her collection. She calls her site Microangela - it is an absolute must-see! Here's a couple of moderately priced books by David George Gordon you might find interesting: The links will open Amazon.Com's site in new browser windows - from which you can learn more about each book and order them safely if you'd like. They really make wonderful gifts ! The

Well I haven't even skimmed the surface of what is out there with regards to roaches. The Altavista search engine comes up with over 36 thousand references for the cockroach. Someone could probably develop a web portal dedicated to pulling together online roach resources. I don't think I will today. If the idea appeals to you, go for it. Maybe Baygon will sponsor you.
